Espresso!

Espresso!
Ever wondered how that halter-neck kurti or the Brigitte Bardot gingham dress that come to some of the best stores (even online) disappear off the shelves faster than you blink your eyes? Lynda Smith / Pixabay

Pause. Think. Re-think before you step out to shop fashion.

It is an espresso world we are in. Little time to stand and stare and always the perennial rush. So too our fashion closet! We buy and buy and often forget to wear! Or, it could just be that with outings few and far between in these times of the Covid, most of the online shopping we did means that a bulk of the clothes, footwear or accessories that the courier guy delivered remain wrapped up in the plastic covers they came in!

Plastic – that’s the name of the game! Use and throw! When our parents bought clothes they lasted for a good many wears and washes. How many times could you wear the latest tee shirt or top that you purchased from some of the best brands in town? Think Zara, H&M, Shein, or the clothing bought from the high streets of Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai or trips to Thailand. Easy to buy, quick to fray and peasy to throw!

Fast fashion all right which also means that these wears are being manufactured sans any thought for the people who laboriously embroider and stitch in assembly lines for hours together with poor wages and not the best of working conditions and of course a complete disregard for the planet.

The espresso world caught up with fashion perhaps some time around the time of the Industrial Revolution when mechanisation ensured faster production and consumption.
