You got a marriage or two to attend and really can’t decide what to wear? Worry not. We got you covered.

The big fat Indian wedding season for the summer of ’22 comes to a close on July 9, and you got a marriage or two to attend and really can’t decide what to wear? Worry not. We got you covered.

Decide what do you want to wear for the various ceremonies. The ubiquitous mekhela-sador, lehenga, sharara, the never-to-be-dropped sari, fusion wear or a short kurti-patiala salwar with an elaborate dupatta, or the multi-panelled anarkali kurta royally sweeping the floor. Heavy silk in this hot, humid, rainy weather is best avoided even if you are indoors with the airconditioning giving you the chills. And western wear for an Indian wedding works real good when fused with chunky traditional jewellery and other accessories.

And says who you have to wear the mekhela-sador like everyone else does? A short top that ends at the waist and the sador draped like a dupatta; or, take it over your shoulders and let it fall back with the two sides on either hand with a matching potli. How about a plain, straight long top, with the mekhela design just around the neck or the sleeve and below a low-cut back? Don’t forget the slits, those deep gashes on either side, and position the pleats either to the left or right, and if you have an hourglass waist, a couple on either side. When it comes to styling, choose whatever you wish to, be sure it suits your body type and look, and rock it!

Men, we women have designs on your kurta and the dhoti too! There are a whole lot of funky cuts and patterns with some of the best menswear brands and their stitched pleated dhotis are to die for. Check the dhotis out in cool crinkly cotton and linen and team with an embellished crop top and a sparkly, shimmery broad or slim waistband. A sharp pencil heel or a bling jutti will add to your pizazz and you sure are going to stand out. Cheat tip: If you or a friend or a relative is going to Kolkata, that’s the place to pick the best stitched dhotis to slip into.

Whatever you choose to wear, opt for light fabrics like chiffon, georgette, chanderi, or the very many blends available these days. Go for heritage crafts like chikankari with mukeish work, kota doria, block prints with embellishments, and a whole lot more. And more on heritage crafts soon.
