Do fashion trends really work in a land as diverse as ours? They work some, they work not many a time. Anita Dongre

Let’s see you rock 2025 in all things planet-friendly and restocked from the bottom of the closet or a long-forgotten trunk!

And here we go vrooming into 2025. Do fashion trends really work in a land as diverse as ours? They work some, they work not many a time.

There was a time when the Hindi film industry was the key source of a fashion trend, and, as I have often said, the hair style, the bindi as it moved centre of the forehead to the glabella, the hemline or would it be the ‘fall’ of the sari, to sweep the floor or just skimming the ankles, the length of the kurta, etc was all decided from film to film. Remember, that was the age when the movies often took time to make a mark at the box office and a few weeks before they could touch the masses.

I distinctly remember polka dots, flared trouser bottoms, straight denim pants, peasant or A-line long skirts, buckrum salwars, big collars, lot of suede and felt from my kidhood days.

Two decades and plus down the line, you can now dig deep into your mom’s closet to ferret out those suede coats, asymmetrical cuts, smocking and lace, crochets, polka dots, wide-legged trousers, unisex clothing, animal prints — all things that give a retro vibe in vibrant tones with shades of yellow and turquoise. Colours, need I say again, cannot follow the discrete Indian palette!

Layering, even for the summer, will lend that dash of panache. Choose the fabric according to the season.

Let’s see you rock 2025 in all things planet-friendly and restocked from the bottom of the closet or a long-forgotten trunk!

And happy-happies as you rock on to the last five of this decade!
