Some tips for men on how to visually tone down that paunch.

How many times have you been body-shamed? While people are today increasingly aware of the inherent meanness associated with the shaming of an individual for weight, what cannot be negated is the need to eat healthy and burn those extra calories. Whether you are at it or not, here are a few points to help you visually tone down that paunch. And this is specifically for men. Women can borrow some tips too!

  • Go monochrome! Not necessarily black or white, but any colour in some of its various hues. That symmetry of colour may not give you the sharp silhouette you so crave but it will definitely melt a lot of fat within its folds.
  • Say no to horizontal stripes only if they are broad and thick. Go vertical to give you length and camouflage some of those bulges, and if the rules are small in width, any which ways, the better to conceal all that you wish to.
  • Tucking in the shirt may look dapper on a slim silhouette, but if the big belly needs to be checked, wear shirts which have a curved hem, and in the right length.
  • Go V! The neck shape that will best flatter the man with a big tummy is the V as it makes the neck look longer and diverts the focus from some flab in the middle.
  • Long sleeves it should be to accentuate those shoulders and once again give the illusion of a slimmer look.
  • Size is critical. If you wear too loose or too tight a shirt or tee, know that it is doing nothing to enhance your look. Comfortable is the way to go and options could include a tapered or straight cut shirt; a size big will do, but small never ever. And definitely not baggy.
  • So too for trousers. A straight cut with a smooth front works the best. Ditch the skinny, the low- or high-waisted, and no pleats at the front please.
  • Choose your fabric wisely. Lighten that weight there! Go for cottons, linens or any fabric that’s not too thick. Stretch works fine but again not too fitted.
